A Practical Approach to Starting a Business
A Practical Approach to Starting a Business
Starting a business doesn't have to be a huge, risky endeavor. A more practical approach is to:
- Start with a marketable skill. What are you good at that people are willing to pay for?
- Listen to your potential customers. Before you build anything, talk to people who are looking to hire someone with your skills. What are their problems? What are their questions? What are their frustrations?
- Offer to help for free. Provide small bits of advice and guidance without asking for anything in return. This allows you to build relationships and to learn more about the needs of your target audience.
- Look for trends. As you talk to more people, you will start to see patterns in their problems and needs.
- Create a product or service that addresses those trends. By the time you're ready to sell something, you will have a deep understanding of your customers and a built-in audience of people who already know, like, and trust you.
This approach is less risky and more likely to lead to success than the traditional approach of building a product in isolation and then trying to find customers for it.
