Commitments Grow Their Own Legs
Commitments Grow Their Own Legs
Once a person makes a commitment, they will start to see the world in a different way. They will begin to notice things that support their commitment and ignore things that contradict it. This is because we have a natural tendency to want to be consistent with our commitments.
This can lead to a situation where a commitment becomes self-perpetuating. The person will continue to find new reasons to support their commitment, even if the original reasons for the commitment are no longer valid. This is because the commitment has "grown its own legs."
For example, a person might buy a particular brand of car because they believe it is the most reliable. After they have made the purchase, they will start to notice all of the other people who drive the same brand of car. They will also be more likely to read articles that praise the car and ignore articles that criticize it. This will reinforce their belief that they have made the right choice, even if the car is not as reliable as they originally thought.
