Symbols of Authority
Symbols of Authority
We are often more influenced by the symbols of authority than by the substance of what is being said. This is because we use mental shortcuts to make decisions, and symbols of authority are a powerful shortcut.
There are three main symbols of authority that can trigger our obedience:
- Titles: A person's title can be a powerful symbol of authority. For example, we are more likely to obey someone who has the title of "doctor" or "professor."
- Clothing: A person's clothing can also be a powerful symbol of authority. For example, we are more likely to obey someone who is wearing a uniform.
- Trappings: The trappings of authority, such as expensive cars and jewelry, can also be powerful symbols of authority.
These symbols of authority are so powerful that they can often be used to persuade us even when the person using them has no real authority. This is why it is important to be aware of the power of these symbols and to question whether the person using them has any real authority.
This is related to The Authority Principle.
