You should make decisions which are good for the company and not to please your boss
We often think our bosses are smarter and try to make decisions they'll be happy with. Usually they can just tell their opinion and we are going to follow that. As an employee you should think about the company and if the decision is good for it. As a boss you should make people come up to the decision on their own and try not to affect their ideas.
If person comes to you and says they want to work on a new idea, but you are sure the idea will fail, ask yourself:
- Is they a great employee?
- Do I believe they has a good judgment?
- Do I believe they can make positive impact?
- It they good enough to be in the team?
All "yes" -> let them work on their idea. One "no" -> fire them.
If the idea works celebrate it. If it fails ask what learning came from the project, don't make a big deal, shine a bright light on this failed bet.
