Consider an External Facilitator
For a positioning exercise to be successful, it's often helpful to bring in an experienced external facilitator to guide the discussion. An outside perspective can be invaluable in breaking through internal biases and ensuring a productive outcome.
An external facilitator can help in several ways:
- Challenge assumptions: They can question long-held beliefs and "sacred cows" that may be holding the company back.
- Ensure all voices are heard: They can create a safe space for open and honest discussion, and make sure that no single group or individual dominates the conversation.
- Keep the process on track: They can keep the team focused on the task at hand and guide them through a structured process.
- Provide an objective perspective: They are not invested in the outcome in the same way that internal team members are, so they can offer a more neutral and objective point of view.
While it's possible to run a positioning exercise internally, an external facilitator can often help the team to achieve a better result in a shorter amount of time.
