The Importance of Traffic Quality
The Importance of Traffic Quality
Not all website traffic is created equal. The quality of your traffic plays a huge role in how well your website converts visitors into customers.
What is Traffic Quality?
Traffic quality is a measure of two things:
- How closely a visitor matches your ideal customer profile: A high-quality visitor is someone who is a good fit for your product and is actively looking for a solution to a problem that you can solve.
- The strength of your relationship with the visitor: A visitor who knows and trusts you is much more likely to buy from you than a complete stranger.
The Problem with Low-Quality Traffic
Traffic from large, general-purpose websites like TechCrunch or Digg is often of low quality. While it may result in a large number of visitors, these visitors are typically not your target audience and are unlikely to convert into customers.
The Power of High-Quality Traffic
In contrast, traffic from a targeted email list or a niche blog is of much higher quality. These visitors are already interested in what you have to offer and have a pre-existing relationship with you. As a result, they will convert at a much higher rate, often 5-10x higher than traffic from a general-purpose site.
Focusing on Quality over Quantity
It's a common mistake to focus on the sheer volume of traffic to your website. A much more effective strategy is to focus on attracting high-quality traffic. By using tools like Google Analytics to track which traffic sources are converting, you can focus your marketing efforts on the channels that are delivering the best results.
Don't be seduced by the vanity metric of large traffic numbers. The ultimate goal is not to get the most visitors, but to get the right visitors.
