Seek Diverse Perspectives to Separate Fact from Perception

The meaning of any significant event is radically changed depending on the perspective from which you view it. What is an earthquake for one group can be a non-event for another.

Effective leaders and decision-makers learn to actively seek out and understand these diverse perspectives. By looking at the world through multiple, different prisms, you can begin to separate objective facts from subjective perceptions.

This is a critical skill, especially in dire circumstances when the "facts" seem to dictate a single, negative outcome. The simple existence of an alternate, plausible narrative based on a different perspective can be enough to:

• Inform Your Outlook: Provide a more complete and nuanced understanding of the situation.
• Uncover New Solutions: Reveal options and strategies that were invisible from your original viewpoint.
• Maintain Hope: Keep morale and hope alive within a team by showing that the seemingly inevitable negative outcome is not the only possibility.

Engaging with people and ideas from radically different backgrounds (e.g., the football team vs. the calculus class) is a powerful way to train this skill. It forces you to see that your own perception is not the only version of reality.
