The Three-Step Superstar Interview
The Three-Step Superstar Interview
The three-step superstar interview is a structured process designed to uncover the true personality and potential of a candidate. It consists of three phases: Relax, Probe, and Attack.
1. Relax
- Purpose: To put the candidate at ease and allow them to show their best side.
- Method: Be friendly, be a great listener, and create a comfortable environment. You can even ask them to write down five questions they would like to be asked.
2. Probe
- Purpose: To gain a deep understanding of the candidate's personality, motivations, and past experiences.
- Method: Ask open-ended questions about their childhood, challenges, accomplishments, and relationships. The goal is to understand what shaped them as a person. This is where you can test for the key traits of a superstar.
3. Attack
- Purpose: To test the candidate's resilience and self-confidence in the face of adversity.
- Method: At the end of the interview, reject the candidate. For example, "You seem like a nice person, but I don't think you have what it takes to be a superstar in this role." Observe their reaction. A superstar will push back and challenge your assessment, while a weaker candidate will crumble.
This process, which begins with The 'Reject Them First' Prescreen, is a powerful way to identify true superstars and avoid costly hiring mistakes.
