Tribal Method of Training
Tribal Method of Training
The "Tribal Method of Training" is a term for informal, unstructured, on-the-job training where new hires learn by watching existing employees. It is a highly ineffective and risky way to train.
Characteristics
- Word-of-Mouth: Information is passed from person to person without a formal process.
- Lack of Standardization: There are no manuals, scripts, or standardized procedures.
- "Watch and Learn": The primary method of learning is observation.
The Dangers of the Tribal Method
- Inconsistency: Leads to inconsistent performance and customer experiences.
- Propagation of Bad Habits: New employees may learn and adopt the bad habits and attitudes of the person they are observing.
- Lack of Foundational Knowledge: New hires don't receive a solid foundation of knowledge before being exposed to real-world situations.
- No Quality Control: There is no way to ensure that the training is accurate or complete.
The tribal method should be replaced with a system of Formalized Training to ensure that all employees are trained to a high standard.
