Culture drives behavior
Culture is behavior. Employees inside your company should know how to behave. The employees will support the business with the right culture.
Why think about culture now?
You are going through 3 stages when the company grows:
- Idea stage
- Product Market Fit
- Scaling
People who you hire will be very involved. The first 20 people will be highly involved in hiring. If you make mistakes and get wrong people the mistakes will be propagated.
1. Be proud of the problem you're solving
You need to be proud of the fact you are solving this problem. Building the company is hard. If you are not proud of what you are doing it is hard to sustain the level of energy. Everyone around you will see how you feel about the company.
2. Create a long-term vision
You should discuss the long-term purpose of the work you do.
Create the most compelling car company of the 21st century by driving the world's transition to electric vehicles. > Tesla
A microcomputer on every desk and in every home running Microsoft software. > Microsoft
Organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. > Google
3. List values; then model behaviour behaviour
You can use this list as a hiring filter. This list should be short, less than 5 points. During the hiring process you can use it.
Spotify:
- Innovative
- Collaborative
- Sincere
- Passionate
- Playful
Don't just write it on paper, model this behaviour. Move Fast and Break Things describes how it works.
4. Align culture with customer
It's much better to build culture based on a customer and make it externally-focused.
5. Discuss diversity
Discuss the diversity in your company. Diversity of opinions. People with the opposite opinions should work together.
6. Hiring process
Discuss the values of your company, make sure you use it during the interviews.
