How to Lead (Ali Rowghani)
How to Lead
No single archetype of great leader
All the great leaders are really difference, there is not single type of leaders. Anyone can become a leader.
You have to be yourself and you shouldn't imitate Steve Jobs. Because humans are very good at finding out fakes.
Clear communication
If you gonna have other people follow you, you need to be clear. The more your company grow, the better your communication skills should become.
The communication should be simple. To communicate simple you need to spend a lot of time.
It is a 10 minute speech, I need 2 weeks to prepare. If I can talk for half an hour, it will take a week. If I can talk as much as I can then I don't need time to prepare.
Amazon's 3 pillars are lower prices, larger choice, faster deliveries.
The way you become better:
- You have to think clear to communicate clear. Free up some time to just think.
- Plan and practice the communication. Get coaching, ask for feedback.
Good judgment about people
As your organization grow, you need to hire other people and the decisions you make about who to hire and if you make bad decisions, then people won't trust you in terms who you empower. When you are starting to recruit you need to spend time and energy for this process. Talk to them about their background.
Personal integrity and commitment
Great leaders have personal integrity and commitment. Avoiding behavior that diminishes them. Commitment is giving you all, people see it and people appreciate it.
Ask yourself if your behavior is transparent for other people.
Earning trust
Trust is success metric of leadership. Across any organization the goal of leadership is to get trust. Having good timing when you confront issue, not being selfish.
As you evaluate one course of action versus another, ask yourself which path is going to generate more trust in you as a leader and always try to choose that path.
